What a crazy results show American Idol provided for viewers last Wednesday night.  First off, the performance by Tony Bennett that everyone was so looking forward to, was not to be.  Seems that the poor guy had come down with the flu and could not perform.  Lucky that Ryan Seacrest has friends in high places in the music business because Mr. Bennett’s stand in was none other than Michael Buble.  Singing in the appropriate genre he put on quite a show.  If you are a big fan, you’ll be happy to know that he is releasing a new album on May 1st!

On to the results……The contestants were separated into groups of three.  The obviously safe trio of Jordin, Lakisha and Melinda were off the hook right away.  I’m not sure why, but I see so little emotion from Lakisha.  She was base line when it was announced that she was safe and she had the same blank look when the results of who would be leaving the show were announced.  Perhaps she has just got her eye on the prize and she is really staying detached from the rest of the group intentionally.  In any case maybe she should consider taping into some internal feelings for her upcoming performances, because her counter parts Jordin and Melinda are blowing her away in that department.

As I mentioned in my recap of Tuesday’s show, I predicted that all the guys were going to be safe this week….and what do you know?  Yep, that’s right!  Blake, Chris, Sanjaya and Phil will all be staying on to perform again next week.  Perhaps after another week goes by all the buzz about Sanjaya will finally simmer down.  It is actually irritating that so much press is being received for the wrong reasons.  Either this kid is in complete denial and buying into all the press or he is working us all and laughing all the way to the bank.  Time will surely tell.
Antonella finally had to face reality and hopefully so will Sanjaya some time soon.  There are all ready far too many over rated teenage celebs with huge egos in Hollywood…the last thing we need is one more.

So this leaves two of the girls on the block.  Gina and Haley couldn’t be more different.  Haley is a pageant style, broadway singer.  She has big eyelashes, long legs and in the old days could have been one of those torch singers with a big band playing in the background as people ate their dinner and talked over her mediocre voice.  Gina on the other hand is ultra modern.  Maybe too modern for the voters in the bible belt region of the U.S.  With her black and red hair, bold make up, hard rocker style and let’s not forget that tongue ring, perhaps it was just too much for the American public to support.  Leave that look to the LA and NY folks, we are used to it.  It has been said that when people work that hard to be noticed something is missing inside, I hope that is not the case with Gina.  Hopefully she is strong and self reliant because her days on the Idol stage are over.  An embarrassed Haley (and she should be!) sulked to her seat as Ryan threw Gina under the bus. 

She must be a nice girl because Jordin, Haley and Melinda were quite tearful to see her go.  As I mentioned earlier, Lakisha could have cared less……one less person for her to worry about!  I did not ever think Gina had the pipes to actually become the American Idol but I sure as heck thought she would blow by Haley, Sanjaya and probably Phil.  Go figure.

So, let’s get this straight…..the country can support a girl that sells sex, with a voice that sounds like your sister’s when she used to sing in the school choir and they can support a kid with wild hair and the voice of Bobby Bradey but they just can’t take a girl with a terrific voice that dyes her hair and pierces her tongue.  Wow….just when you think things have changed, they really haven’t changed at all.  Hopefully in the remaining episodes of the show, the voting public will get their collective act together and LISTEN to the voices and the level of musical purity and the delivery of each song.  If we are lucky they will not remain superficial and start to support what this show initially intended to provide…..an opportunity for excellence to some deserving singer who would have never had a chance in Hollywood otherwise.
